Celebrating Success: Buckswood Overseas Summer School (BOSS) Annual Review 2023

This past year has been an unforgettable one for everyone involved with Buckswood Overseas Summer School (BOSS). Our enriching, adventure-filled courses provided young learners with an incredible opportunity to enhance their life skills while having fun and making lifelong friendships.

Key Aspects of Success

The success of our courses can be attributed to our innovative, independence fostering, confidence growing, mind broadening, internationalism embracing, teamwork enhancing, curiosity encouraging and learner-centred approach. This approach ensured that each student's unique learning needs were met, leading to remarkable individual and collective accomplishments.

One of the standout features of 2023 was the way in which our courses fostered a love for the English language, cultivating effective communication skills and understanding among our students, which are valuable assets for success and growth in all aspects of life the real world.

Memorable Events and Maximum Attendees

We hosted a range of events during 2023 that added to the overall vibrancy of our Spring Course and Summer School experience. One such event was our ‘Equality, Football and Lewes FC’ project in which all students from across the globe participated, educating them and broadening their minds when it comes to the importance of community and equality while creating a sense of unity and camaraderie as we all learned together via presentations from Lewes FC staff, participating in enlightening workshops and supported the team and their cause as we chanted together at the Dripping Pan stadium in the beautiful and historic town of Lewes.

In terms of attendance, and as expected, 2023 saw a significant increase in the number of students participating in our courses as we finally bid farewell to the previous two years of pandemic. Whilst expected, this surge is not only a testament to the quality of our courses and the commitment of everyone involved, but also our ‘can do’ attitude and will to succeed as we never gave up during those two years, running seven successful courses in 2020 (two online courses), 2021 (three in-house courses) and 2022 (two in-house courses) whilst other said it was impossible.

Testimonials and Feedback

Feedback is so important to us here at BOSS because without feedback, how do we know how to improve? We take feedback from all stakeholders in BOSS including our students, staff, partners and parents and we use it to look forward and change our courses for the better. The feedback that we received in 2023 has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have praised our course’s emphasis on instilling responsibility and the valuable life lessons that our students learn during their time with us. Having said this, we have still made quite a significant change to our academic and activity and excursion programme which all now form part of a collective theme. You can learn more about that here.

Looking Forward: BOSS 2024

Given the success of our courses in 2023, anticipation is already building for BOSS 2024. Bookings are coming in faster than ever before and our team is planning to build upon the successes of this year by introducing new elements, such as our theme-based programme, to make our courses even more engaging and beneficial to our students. We are also looking to improve (our already fully comprehensive) welfare department with the addition of a fulltime Welfare Coordinator, a role previously filled by the director and management team. This will allow the director and management team to put more time into and focus their full attention into other aspects of our courses.

To conclude, Buckswood Overseas Summer School (BOSS) continues to provide an exemplary educational, life experience for our young learners. It's an initiative that not only equips our students with essential life skills but also creates lasting memories. Here's to an even more successful BOSS 2024!
