Neurodiversity at BOSS
At Buckswood Overseas Summer School (BOSS), neurodiversity is something very close to our hearts. Our Director, Neil, is himself neurodiverse with a diagnosis of ADHD and dyslexia. His experiences shape the way we design our programme, timetable, and care. This ensures that the needs of all students — neurodiverse and neurotypical — are understood and supported in daily life at BOSS.

Many members of our team are also neurodiverse. This natural connection allows us to recognise when a student may be feeling overwhelmed and to offer support before it becomes a bigger issue. Our awareness comes not only from training and research but also from lived experience, giving us empathy, understanding, and practical strategies to help.
Over the years, we have welcomed many neurodiverse students, and we know that BOSS can provide a refreshing and empowering experience. Our approach to English learning is active and multisensory, with role play, games, singing, and group activities. These methods help build language skills, social confidence, and self-esteem. Our varied timetable, with its balance of lessons, outdoor activities, and excursions, also supports students who thrive in structured but engaging environments.

The spirit of BOSS is inclusive, respectful, and joyful. We make sure relevant staff are aware of each student’s needs and we handle this information with discretion. No child is ever labelled or judged — instead, we celebrate what makes each person unique. Our goal is simple: for every student to feel safe, understood, and free to be themselves. As we say at BOSS, “Be yourself, because everyone else is taken.”
